Lapbook Lessons

I've been looking over the curriculum I have for my son, for kindergarten, and started feeling a bit overwhelmed. I'm not sure what to do as far as Social Studies for him. I'm also trying to come up with some kind of daily schedule. How many days for each subject, how much time spent on each, etc. Anybody have any ideas?

Hey, I just asked the same question!

We did 4 yr old Kindergarten last year, we used Little Hearts for His Glory. This year we'll be doing 5 yr old Kindergarten (with a little First Grade mixed in) and I'm in the same boat you are. It's mid-July, and I don't know what exactly I'm going to use.

I'm not sure if you need early readers yet or not, but I've found these books at Rod and Staff that seem to have a lot of Social Studies and Biblical History topics interweaved into their Learning to Read books.

They don't do "Kindergarten" so it's under the First Grade level here

another thing I have found so far that sounds interesting is this really neat book from Christian Light Education, it's called "I Wonder" and it's an early reader book, and you can get a workbook to go along with it. The stories present lessons to be learned, and it seems like we can cover a bit of our social studies along with the language / reading applications as well. I always like to double dip :)

I know that's not much help, sorry.

Maybe someone else who actually has a clue about what they'll be doing next year can comment! lol,

Hi Amy I am new to this also. My dd went to ps last year for k and I had no complaints but felt like the lord had put it on my heart to keep her home to school. The best piece of advise I got was keep it simple. I was so worried about getting every subject in. I was TOTALLY over whelmed. I began to second guess my self. Then I thought back to all the papers she would bring home at night. All she really did was writing and math. She did her sight words and of course worked on reading. So just stick to the 3 Rs for now. You don't need to worry about the other stuff until they get into higher grades. Keep you schedule light. I have it planned that we will be "in school" from 9-12 Mon-Thurs. Fridays are reserved for co-op or free days. If we get done before 12 awesome if it takes longer than 12 some days that's okay too. Just relax and remember it is only kindergarten. In my state K isn't even required! We will focus manly on the 3 Rs I will lapbook to fill in the gaps for history but spread it out over the month and focus on something that took place historically that month even if it is as simple as the invention of toothpaste!! We are doing a neat backyard science book once a week. We will have an hour of family readaloud time and we will do a small bible work book everyday. I really don't see it taking us past 11 most days. Good Luck hth

In kindergarten, we keep it short and simple for each activity. 5-10 minutes for a letter/sound/phonics lesson, 5-10 minutes for numbers, counting, calendar, weather lesson. We read a lot of books. That can be at different times during the day and for as long as their attention span holds. Sometimes we can color a page or play with a quiet toy for read aloud and just stop and ask them something about the story during that time to see if they are paying attention. Those are the main things we do everyday in addition to Bible time & praise songs and outdoor play/discovery. Then we rotate art, music, science, history/famous person, timeline, geography, etc, once a week. That's when we can do our unit studies and lapbooks. In kindergarten and early elementary grades we have a much more relaxed pace to fit our lives.
