The Great Depression Study

I'm about to start a unit study with my 6 year old daughter (reading level 9 year old) on the great depression. We've recently bought The Waltons on DVD & this has started the ball rolling. I've ordered the books on "The Waltons" but am wondering if anyone has any suggestions of novels or biographies that may be appropriate to read with her based in this time period? We live in Tasmania, Australia, so I'd love to include some Australian stories if I can find some. Any suggestions will be hel… Continue

Hi - thank you for your info on the Great Depression. I'll have to start searching our library, soon. I hope your family is feeling well again. :)

Hello! I listed the resources we used for our Canada lapbook at my blog for you. I hope they help.

I would love to know what resources you find for the Great Depression. I'm hoping to reach that time period within the next year.

Glad to help. I have found many books at the library and some out of print ones at the Life Line book fest we have here each year. I sometimes go to garage sales and find books there or at op shops. Its fun to see what you can find and where. Enjoy.

CM = Charlotte Mason, which is a literature based approach to learning. She was an educator who seemed to understand how children love to learn and worked with that.

I am sorry to say I didn't follow up on that topic as a lapbook. Hubby was wanting more academics so I changed to a CM programme. I have been reading "Our Sunburnt Country" to the children as well as "Dot and the Kangaroo". I found www.downunderlit.com had some good ideas which you may be able to use. I've just remembered another book we used that lead the children to do their own maps etc. was "My Place" by Nadia Wheatley and Donna Rawlins. It begins in 1988 and goes backwards in ten yearly increments to pre written history. I hope this helps a little. All the best with your home schooling.

I have 2 girls age 8 and 11. We have always home educated. I have only had 1 non white Christmas 20 years age in NZ. It was sooo weird. A santa parade with people in bikinis! We are near Banff so we are avid skiiers. 30x btw Jan- March this year. I have tons of BP links and I bought 2 studys from cirrclick or Hands of a Child. Though I really have just used ideas and created our own pages for the scrapbook. This week we did dandilions and plant life cycles ( a loose connection , BP was an avid naturalist and early botinist) Last week we did The Scientific Classification of Life and how humans where seperated from Animals by God. It was an easy cut and glue into a mini book but we learned alot. Now my oldest is eager to study latin.....ahhhh. I use a variety of search terms.....the key word + worksheets, printables, crafts, actiivties, workbook, lessons, lesson plan, unit, study, unit study, paper dolls, crossword, cut and paste, reading, images, games, video, teach, all about, puzzles, lapbook, notebook, scrapbook, teacher kit, teaching plan etc... I often attach the word free onto my search. I also do each search seperate and use different key words ( ie: Beatrix Potter, Peter Rabbit, Victorian England, Victorian Era, Queen Victoria.....). I also order a ton of books from our interlibrary loan system and leave them around for the kids and I to read. I do the same with videos. Hope your study is going well. Amanda

Your Welcome De Arn- you are a long ways from a good Sask springtime. It's snowing today - YES snowing here in the Rockies.....I lived in Surfers Paradise for a wonderful totally fun time way back before my 2nd decade. I noticed you scrapebook. That is another format we use in our unit studies all the time. We love it and my girls say it's the most fun. We are doing a Peter Rabbit/Beatrix Potter/ Victorian England/ Nature Study right now. It's so neat..We are scrapbooking it and it is one of the neatest books we have done in 7 years. I am glad the links were useful. I try to 'score' as much cool free stuff as possible when I do a unit so it wasn't a hard goggle search for me. Learning what terms to use took me a while but I have it downpat now. I find way more then I use but I love knowing I have so much choice when we are in the thick of things. We usually study till we are sick of something so we have a ways to go on our current study. Cheers
