Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O'Dell

This book was my favorite in the 4th grade when we read it. That it is a favorite among all 4th and 5th graders is obvious by how many unit studies and web pages are devoted to it online. So, when my book club decided to read this to our little first graders, I thought I'd have no problem finding material to reinforce the educational aspects of it to them. But I didn't find anything age appropriate for 1st graders, so I made my own lapbook elements. Here are the links I got much information from and the files for making an Island of the Blue Dolphins lapbook. We haven't quite finished the book, so I can't add pictures of our lapbook yet. But I will add them to my blog when we're done.

You can use this detailed description of the Island to label a map with key places from the story

I also used the Pacific Islands doll and the Native American doll from Making Friends to create Karana's unique wardrobe of skins, feathers, and plant fibers.

There is also a paperdoll of Alaskan natives at Blue Bonkers that is closer to Innuit, but could suffice for an Aleut doll.

Here are the lapbook files

Island survival tabs.pdf

Island Shelter matchbooks.pdf

Island games book.pdf

There are lots of other things I could think of to add to this lapbook - Bible verses about courage or loneliness, a map of San Nicolas Island to label as you read, exploring the things that Karana learns (like forgiveness) - but I was running out of room! I hope some others will add new things to this project!

I just put together a lapbook for Island of the Blue Dolphins and I then found yours! Oh well, you had a few components that I hadn't added to mine and we actually worked on those yesterday. Thanks for putting these together, you did a great job!
