Lapbook Lessons

My oldest son is Autistic and has responded to Lapbooking with wonderful results! H eloves flipping through them and reveiwing what he has learned. Before lapbooking, I was unsure how much he was retaining. Autistic kids have a hard time communicating so I had no idea if I was getting through! This opened up a way for him to commmunicate to me and others! I know now that he is learning!
Anyone else tried this with autistic kids?

Yes indeed lapbooking is a great way for kids with autism to learn. My son has asperger's and ADHD. He loves lapbooking and flipping through his finished ones. It makes for retaining the information better than traditional textbooks. Public school was boring for him and he begged us not to ever send him back.

My oldest,7, has Asperger's and my 2nd yougest has ADHD. I find the two very incompatable. They have a hard time being in the same room for homeschool. so how does having both work? I thought they were opposites?

Many kids on the spectrum have a mixture of diagnosis rather than just one standing all alone. My son is very hyper active but we don't medicate him because he has Aspergers. When he was in public school they wanted us to get him tested for it in conjuction with his Asperger diagnosis. We don't see him as being so out of control that he needed medication. We think some teacher's just have too many students to deal with and don't have the patience to deal with students like him. At home we haven't had a problem getting him to do work or stay in his seat. Here is a link that may answer some of your questions. I had a bunch of information concerning this but I'll have to find it.

My five year old has PDD-NOS and making lapbooks is something that he has really enjoyed, and like others have said, he likes to look at them over and over again. Both my TSS and BSC have been impressed with his response to these projects. One of his greatest difficulties is peer interaction and we just finished up a lapbook on friendship. When I put it together I added a couple of unused (as yet) flaps so that he can add to the project over time. Because the lapbooks are so visual he really responds well to them and is able to independently recall what he's learned and apply it in a practical way.

My oldest who is 12 is autistic and considered moderate-severe. It's most evident in relation to her speech development and delays. This is my first year homeschool and I'm full of doubt although I have a master's level spec. ed. degree. I have always had a hard time finding something that will really work with her meaning something that will prompt her to recall and communicate information although I am quite creative, it's just that she won't display much of what she will with me with others and vice versa. The lapbooks are wonderful!! I am so glad I found this site and subsequent sites since becoming a member. She is on a K-2nd grade level in some areas but is a 7th grade student. There is so much more that I have endured with schools and teachers with one of the most recent issues as of last school year I was told that she was incapable of doing much. Yea right!! This kid is smart but has some issues in some areas but she's cleaver, mischievous, and has a devilish sense of humor. She's simply just different.

My son is 8 and has a speech language impairment where he is affected in the processing of receptive and expressive language (but has a quick, smart alec, mouth). Lapbooks have cut down on difficulty quite a bit plus he enjoys the assembly process. He's on a 1st-2nd grade level and is a 3rd grade student.

Both of my kids have some of the same issues as you can see and are on the same levels in many areas. Both of them have trouble with abstract as I do myself sometimes (as well as their other parent). With the lapbooks they don't have to try to recall information from what seems to be out of thin air for them.

I just wanted to post and say that i really appreciate those who post the books and share links to other sites with free books. I will definitely hold on to our books for as long as they last because I'm sure they will get PLENTY of use.
