Lapbook Lessons

My oldest son is Autistic and has responded to Lapbooking with wonderful results! H eloves flipping through them and reveiwing what he has learned. Before lapbooking, I was unsure how much he was retaining. Autistic kids have a hard time communicating so I had no idea if I was getting through! This opened up a way for him to commmunicate to me and others! I know now that he is learning!
Anyone else tried this with autistic kids?

My daughter has pdd-nos (high functioning autism) anyways we have been using lapbooking to also. Lapbooking had really made a huge difference in improving her educational levels.

hopefully your son will enjoy looking at his lapbooks over and over again like my son does. I'm a worrier too...I think all artists are...but I put it in God's hands.
By the way, I love your Pre-Raphaelite icon and your cr8tvgirl thing! Why didn't I think of that? My classmates in art school were always painting my portrait because they said I look Pre-Raphaelite...LOL
Anyway, we have to love how our sons and daughters can let their own creativity come out with lapbook style homeschooling!

I am a paraeducator that works with asd children and the one I did this week was on penguins. My one student just loved it!

I'm so glad you get to use lapbooks with your students! My son's TSS recommmends them to her other clients. I was thinking of doing one on Autism with my son to help explain it to him. He's only 6, so I don't know how much he'll understand. Any thoughts?

I have lapbooked since my daughter was in grade 2. We were already doing unit studies before that. She has always had many passions and loves to learn a topic inside and out. In June 08 she was diagnosed Aspergers. We have always homeschooled our 2 gals. As we are now grade 3 and 6 - the format has moved to binders as they get to big for just their laps and file folders. I really enjoy finding stuff online to incorrporate into our unit study. We are in the middle of a long study on the Solar System. ( our book has a large chapter on each planet and feature) We just landed on earths moon. In the spring ( April or May?) We will do a combo unit on Beatrix Potter and Victorian England. The Victorian England piece ties in nicley to one of my oldests passions of Victorian and historical fashion. Beatrix was an interesting and bold woman of her time - she also did not go to formal school until she was a teen. My kids love the variety of ways they can display info they have learned in the lapbook folds and I love how easy it is to use anything form of writing projects and add ehancement work to them. It keeps learning relavent, exciting and fun for all of us. We allow our kids to chosse with guidence the topics as I belive the skills they develop as in being active in they own learning our invaluable and I find you can read write and experiment and learn about anything. I have found Math u See to be excellent for my kids. Our Aspie loves the video teacher segments.

Our dd has not been diagnosed with ASD yet (she is being evaluated in June). She will turn 2y/o in a few wks and next yr I will be starting HS Preschool with her. I did this with our ds when he was 2 and he loved it, but I've been trying to figure out just how I'm going to do it with her b/c she is not developmentaly where a 2y/o would be. So this sounds like it will be interesting to try with her. I have read a lot about lapbooking and file folder games for Autistic Children and it seems everyone has sucsess with it! =) Thanks MM =)

I was blessed enough to find this website when I was researching ideas in way to better provide language therapy services to 3 young children with autism that I serve in the public schools as a speech pathologist. The parents of the children were so excited that they were coming home and sharing what they had created. So many wonderful language communication skills are involved in this process.

My oldest son has Autism (high functioning) and some leanring disabilities and we started lapbooking in May. He enjoys making them with me and I can see he is progressing much better with them! One of the things my oldest son likes best about lapbooks, is that he can show his Grandparents "in a nutshell" what he has been studying over a two week period.

Excellent! I am so glad he likes this! Showing off his progress will also help him to retain what was learned!

Yes indeed lapbooking is a great way for kids with autism to learn. My son has asperger's and ADHD. He loves lapbooking and flipping through his finished ones. It makes for retaining the information better than traditional textbooks. Public school was boring for him and he begged us not to ever send him back.

My oldest,7, has Asperger's and my 2nd yougest has ADHD. I find the two very incompatable. They have a hard time being in the same room for homeschool. so how does having both work? I thought they were opposites?
